From the Riverwalk to the ballet, the season’s most cherished traditions return to Tampa Bay

The holidays arrive a little differently on the Gulf Coast. There is no frost on the windows, but there are lights strung through the palms, carolers along the Riverwalk and a social calendar that fills almost as quickly as a December reservation book. This year, Tampa Bay’s favorite traditions return in full form, offering every reason to gather family and friends and celebrate the season close to home. Here are a few of the highlights worth marking on the calendar now.

Santa Fest Downtown

The City of Tampa’s holiday celebration is set for Saturday, December 5, when the Santa Fest Parade steps off at 1 p.m. with marching bands, festive floats, dance groups and, of course, Santa Claus himself. The route travels through Downtown along Madison Street and Ashley Drive before the festivities settle into Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park for an afternoon of crafts, games and free photos with Santa. At 6 p.m., the official tree lighting illuminates seven Christmas trees throughout the park, followed by a free holiday movie on the lawn.

Winter Village

Each season, Curtis Hixon Park transforms into Winter Village, presented by the Tampa Bay Lightning, with an outdoor ice rink, gifts from local makers and a festive backdrop along the Hillsborough River. Dates for the 2026 season had not been announced at press time, so check wintervillagetampa.com before lacing up your skates.

Lights on the Water

On Saturday, December 19, the Holiday Lighted Boat Parade turns the Hillsborough River into a ribbon of color, with decorated vessels setting out at 6:15 p.m. near the lighthouse off Davis Islands. Claim a spot along the Riverwalk early; bring a blanket and a thermos of something warm, and enjoy one of the most enchanting evenings of the year.

Christmas Town

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay celebrates with Christmas Town on select dates from November 13, 2026, through January 4, 2027. The park glows with dazzling lights, live entertainment, seasonal flavors and holiday shopping, and the celebration is included with park admission.

Christmas in the Wild

ZooTampa at Lowry Park brings back Christmas in the Wild on select evenings in December, pairing one of Tampa Bay’s largest light displays with holiday treats and festive entertainment. Members are invited to preview nights before the general public.

A Nutcracker Tradition

Few evenings feel more like the holidays than The Nutcracker. Next Generation Ballet returns to the Straz Center’s Carol Morsani Hall with performances December 18 through 20, a beloved tradition for families across the region. Reserve early, as the best seats tend to go quickly, and make an evening of it with dinner downtown before the curtain rises.

Dressing the Part

Florida’s holiday dress code is an art form of its own. Evenings along the water can turn surprisingly cool in December, so a cashmere wrap or a tailored jacket is never a bad idea, and polished but comfortable shoes make a parade route or a stroll through the lights far more enjoyable. Above all, dress for the photos; these are the nights the whole family will want to remember.

However you choose to celebrate, the season in Tampa Bay is best enjoyed together, outdoors when the weather allows and with a little sparkle wherever possible. Make the reservations, invite the grandparents and leave room for spontaneous plans; the best holiday memories are often unscripted.
