Dr. Alonso Alvarez has built his life and career around resilience, service, and a commitment to improving the lives of others. Born in Lima, Peru, he immigrated with his family to Birmingham, Alabama, after a traumatic event prompted them to seek a safer future. That experience shaped his appreciation for opportunity and purpose, while witnessing his beloved great-uncle battle prostate cancer inspired his path into medicine and ultimately urology.
After earning a double major in Chemistry and History from Amherst College, Dr. Alvarez received his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine before completing his urology training at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. Today, he practices the full spectrum of general urology with a special focus on minimally invasive treatments for kidney and prostate cancers. His philosophy is rooted in the belief that physicians should be more than expert clinicians—they should also be trusted educators and guides. By helping patients fully understand their diagnoses and treatment options, he empowers them to make confident, informed decisions about their health.
A senior partner with Florida Urology Partners, Dr. Alvarez measures success by the trust he earns and the relationships he builds with patients and their families. He is equally committed to serving the Tampa Bay community through mentorship and philanthropy, supporting organizations such as the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, Gift of Adoption, the Tampa General Hospital Foundation, and St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation.
For the past 17 years, Tampa has been home for Dr. Alvarez, his wife, Sejal, and their three sons. Outside the office, he enjoys traveling, outdoor adventures, tennis, and exploring architecture around the world. Looking ahead, he is excited to help expand access to innovative, patient-centered urologic care throughout the region while continuing to serve the community he proudly calls home.
