Surgical Director Advance Heart Failure and Mechanical Support
Dr. Rozales Swanson has dedicated his life to advancing patient care through innovation, compassion, and service. Born in Columbus, Georgia, and raised in an Army family, he spent much of his childhood traveling the world, experiences that shaped his resilience, adaptability, and commitment to helping others overcome adversity. Today, as Surgical Director of Advanced Heart Failure and Mechanical Support, Dr. Swanson focuses on enhancing patient outcomes through cutting-edge technologies and a patient-centered approach that improves both survival and quality of life.
Dr. Swanson’s educational and professional journey reflects a remarkable commitment to excellence. He earned his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine before completing his General Surgery training at Tampa General Hospital under the mentorship of Richard Karl, MD. He also proudly served as a practicing surgeon aboard the USS Kitty Hawk with the United States Pacific Fleet. His advanced specialty training continued with a Cardiovascular Surgery Fellowship at Carolinas Medical Center alongside renowned surgeon Francis Robicsek, MD, followed by a Cardiac Transplant and Advanced Heart Failure Fellowship at Tampa General Hospital.
Having trained in Tampa, Dr. Swanson fell in love with the city’s sense of community and opportunity and chose to remain part of its growth and success. Beyond his clinical work, he is deeply committed to mentoring future physicians, guiding residents and medical students in the operating room, office, and ICU. His philosophy is simple yet profound: treat every patient as if the life of someone you love depended on every decision made.
Outside the hospital, Dr. Swanson finds strength in his family, faith, theater, travel, and lifelong learning. He credits much of his success to the unwavering support of his partners, administration, wife, and children, who continue to inspire his service to others every day.
